On a Beatle-esque “Stairway to Heaven”

After writing about my indifference to Led Zeppelin two weeks ago, I have to admit that this cover of “Stairway to Heaven” is one of the niftiest things I’ve heard in a long while. It’s by an Australian Beatles tribute band, the Beatnix.

What I especially like about the video is the way the footage looks washed out and aged, as if it were something that could have been from one of the Beatles’ early appearances on, say, the Ed Sullivan Show.

Yeah, there are a couple of things that aren’t accurate — the bassist is right-handed, for instance — but overall it has the right feel, the right sound. Of course, the Beatle-esque sound to “Stairway” only shows what a muddled, lyrical mess “Stairway to Heaven” is.

But overall? “Stairway.” As an early, early Beatles song. With the trademark opening to “I Want To Hold Your Hand.” What’s frightening is that, overall, it works. 😆
