On the Ivor Novello Awards

Winners for the Ivor Novello Awards, which celebrate songwriting, have been announced.

Though Elbow was nominated for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for “One Day Like This,” I really was pulling for The Leisure Society’s “Last of the Melting Snow.” They’re an unsigned band, and the song is just brilliant. I love that song It’s just amazing and I don’t have the words for it.

Unfortunately for The Leisure Society, the juggernaut that is Elbow and The Seldom Seen Kid rolled on, and the band took home awards for both “One Day Like This” and “Grounds for Divorce” (for Best Contemporary Song). I’m not unhappy for Elbow, quite the contrary. Anything that brings this band more attention is, in my view, only a good thing. My private band, because that’s how I see them, a band that only I know about, is finally reaching their audience. 🙂

A complete list of winners can be found here. And this article from the BBC has an embedded video of Elbow talking about winning both awards they were nominated for. Interestingly, Elbow’s Guy Garvey praises Nick Hemming’s “Last of the Melting Snow” and says that he thought it should have won as it was his favorite song of last year.

Who am I to argue with Guy Garvey? Congrats to everyone, both winners and nominees.
