Hugh Laurie, of Blackadder, Jeeves & Wooster, and House fame, hosted Saturday Night Live tonight.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t especially funny.
Laurie’s monologue was amusing. The joke he made about being “bottom” in the Royal Shakespeare Company was quite inspired (even if the audience seemed slow on the uptake). The skit based on Most Haunted was funny, though it grew progressively tedious. Laurie handled malfunctioning glasses in the skit about the Queen’s needs in a hotel with aplomb. The other skits with Laurie, though, just weren’t that memorable or amusing.
Laurie can handle skit comedy, he can handle it well, but tonight’s Saturday Night Live just wasn’t well-done skit comedy.

As with most Brits, I tend to double-take at Hugh Laurie being a star and a sex symbol. What? Our Hugh Laurie? The one from A Bit of Fry & Laurie? I’m used enough to the idea now to occassionally think of George or Bertie when watching House, and to only sometimes think of House when watching Blackadder or Jeeves and Wooster.
