{"id":141,"date":"2004-08-22T16:26:41","date_gmt":"2004-08-22T20:26:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.net\/?p=141"},"modified":"2004-08-22T16:26:41","modified_gmt":"2004-08-22T20:26:41","slug":"those-who-forget-the-past","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=141","title":{"rendered":"Those who forget the past&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>What are they teaching kids these days?<\/p>\n<p>A conversation from work:<\/p>\n<p>Boy, maybe nine years old, brings the <i>Transformers<\/i> game to the counter to purchase.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Who&#8217;s your favorite Transformer?&#8221; I ask.<\/p>\n<p>His brow furrows in deep thought.  &#8220;Optimus Prime,&#8221; he says at last.<\/p>\n<p>I nod.  &#8220;I liked Optimus Prime a lot when I was your age, too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s not your favorite now?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rodimus Prime, I think.&#8221;  I pause, take a breath.  &#8220;He was born to lead the Autobots, didn&#8217;t want the responsibility, but everytime he tried to shirk his duties he discovered that he was just as good a leader as Optimus, if not better.  I&#8217;d have preferred it if Optimus had stayed dead, if his sacrifice to save the Autobots from Megatron had meant something.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Rodimus Prime?&#8221; the boy asks.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Autobot leader after Optimus Prime&#8217;s death.  He took on the Autobat Matrix of Leadership and defeated Galvatron and Unicron.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>From the expression on his face, it was clear that I might as well have been speaking gibberish.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What are they teaching kids these days?
