Baltimore has two daily newspapers. There’s the Baltimore Sun<\/i>, the venerable institution, a pretty-much down-the-middle newspaper politically. And then there’s the free daily, the Baltimore Examiner<\/i>, which is well to the right.<\/p>\n
I bring this up, because I discovered, through an Internet search, that I’d written a letter to the Examiner<\/i>, back in March.<\/p>\n
And it wasn’t even on anything important<\/a>:<\/p>\n The Examiner\u2019s March 5 story, \u201cTeachers like the classics,\u201d brought back memories of my high school and college years, when \u201cBeowulf,\u201d \u201cThe Iliad,\u201d and \u201cThe Odyssey\u201d were read.<\/p>\n Her fun article was marred by the accompanying photo, a cover of \u201cThe Iliad\u201d that displays the Trojan Horse in all its glory. In fact, Homer never writes of the Trojan Horse, which originates in Virgil\u2019s \u201cThe Aeneid,\u201d the Roman version of the story of the Trojan War and the founding of Rome by Trojan refugees.<\/p>\n Examiner writer Tina Zou shouldn\u2019t be faulted for a book publisher\u2019s mistake, but readers expecting to find the Trojan Horse in \u201cThe Iliad\u201d will be sorely disappointed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n Now that I’ve read this letter, from the March 8th Examiner<\/i>, I can almost<\/i> remember writing it. And I can envision the article in my head.<\/p>\n Almost.<\/p>\n It’s not as profound as my letter on The Boondocks<\/i> to the Raleigh News & Observer<\/i><\/a>. Or my letter to the N&O<\/i> on the need for impeaching President Bush<\/a> that was published on Christmas Day 2005<\/a> and then, because it was so good, was run again a week later<\/a>.<\/p>\n But, hey. You can’t always<\/i> tilt at windmills. And, let’s be honest. Complaining about the accuracy of an article on the Trojan War?
