Sunday afternoon my sister phoned me up. “What are you doing?” she wanted to know.<\/p>\n
“I’m listening to a baseball game on the radio. Spring training. The Nationals and the Orioles.”<\/p>\n
“There’s baseball already<\/i>?”<\/p>\n
Yup, there’s baseball already.<\/p>\n
To my chagrin, there’s little coverage of spring training in the local newspapers. The free daily, the Examiner<\/i>, runs a page of Orioles news. Nothing grand, nothing that looks around at the other twenty-nine teams, but during the season proper they don’t run baseball news on anyone but<\/i> the Orioles or the nearby minor league teams. The Baltimore Sun<\/i>? They’ve recently reformated the sports section into an eight-page tabloid, and baseball news qualifies for a sidebar. Maybe<\/i> two columns, even.<\/p>\n
You’d think, at least to judge by the newspapers, that baseball still slumbers.<\/p>\n
But when you look outside \u2014 and it’s been sixty degrees and gorgeous all week long, except for Tuesday night when it was windy and a deluge fell from the heavens \u2014 you know<\/i> it’s spring. And spring is baseball.<\/p>\n
If it weren’t for Chicago Cubs bloggers, I’d have no idea what was going on with the Cubbies. My Cubs blog of choice is Bleed Cubbie Blue<\/a>. It’s well-written and insightful.<\/p>\n Opening Day is three and a half weeks away.<\/p>\n Three and a half weeks!<\/p>\n The trees haven’t yet begun to bud. The birds are beginning to sing.
