I can think of no more appropriate song for today than the Beatles’ “Taxman.”<\/p>\n
Last weekend I did my federal income taxes. No real surprises there. I had extra money withheld from each paycheck each pay period to account for tax liabilities on writing income. And I calculated it pretty close to right. Still getting a refund. Not a great<\/i> refund. But it’s a refund.<\/p>\n
Had I only<\/i> the same foresight with my state taxes.<\/p>\n
Because, like George Harrison sang, “”Let me tell you how it will be. There’s one for you, nineteen for me. ‘Cause I’m the taxman.”<\/p>\n
My state taxes would have been almost<\/i> right on — were it not for my writing income in 2007.<\/p>\n
Oh! Woe betide!<\/p>\n
“Ah-a, Mr. Wilson! Ah-a, Mr. Heath!” indeed!<\/p>\n
The end result? It’s a tax bill. It’s not terrible. It’s just annoying<\/i>.<\/p>\n
Note to self. Talk to the Payroll Coordinator at work about having an extra dollar or two withdrawn each pay period for state taxes as well. Which may or may not be possible, depending on how the payroll software is set-up.<\/p>\n
In any event, the state tax return is now done as well. :\/<\/p>\n
Blech.<\/p>\n
