{"id":2463,"date":"2009-08-01T10:30:44","date_gmt":"2009-08-01T15:30:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.net\/?p=2463"},"modified":"2009-08-01T10:30:44","modified_gmt":"2009-08-01T15:30:44","slug":"on-the-flight-of-the-cheese-wedge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=2463","title":{"rendered":"On the Flight of the Cheese Wedge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some news of the weird for the previous week.<\/p>\n<p>To commemorate the 40th-anniversary of Apollo 11&#8217;s landing on the moon, a group of cheesemakers in Somerset, England, decided to send a piece of cheddar into space on a high-altitude weather balloon.<\/p>\n<p>The logic of this, so it seems to me, is that some thought in the past that the moon was made of cheese.  I&#8217;ve never understood <i>why<\/i> our long-ago ancestors thought this.  Clearly they were drunk on fermenting cheese or something similar.<\/p>\n<p>In any event, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/england\/wiltshire\/8171619.stm\">the cheese set forth to the edge of space on the 27th<\/a>, where it ran into problems.<\/p>\n<p>The GPS system onboard the balloon failed.<\/p>\n<p>The plan was that the balloon would reach the upper atmosphere where, thanks to the very low air pressure, the balloon would &#8220;pop,&#8221; allowing the cheese capsule to fall back to earth on a parachute.<\/p>\n<p>But, with the GPS failure, there was no way for the cheesemakers to track where their precious cargo would fall.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, <a href=\"http:\/\/news.bbc.co.uk\/2\/hi\/uk_news\/england\/somerset\/8175347.stm\">the cheese was recovered in Cressex<\/a>.  The cheese wedge was recovered intact.<\/p>\n<p>What Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin thought of this bizarre celebration of their first moonwalk we shall likely never know.<\/p>\n<p>Cheese, glorious cheese.  Pinky would approve.
