{"id":2660,"date":"2010-01-29T22:41:32","date_gmt":"2010-01-30T03:41:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.net\/?p=2660"},"modified":"2010-01-29T22:41:32","modified_gmt":"2010-01-30T03:41:32","slug":"on-todays-typography-lesson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=2660","title":{"rendered":"On Today&#8217;s Typography Lesson"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It has only taken twenty years, but I have <i>finally<\/i> found the font I wanted.<\/p>\n<p>In the mid-1980s, Del Rey used a distinctive typeface for the tables of contents or chapter headings of many of their science fiction novels.  <i>Foundation and Earth<\/i>.  <i>The Songs of Distant Earth<\/i>.  <i>The Integral Trees<\/i>.  <i>Robots and Empire<\/i>.  A really distinctive typeface.  A really classy typeface.<\/p>\n<p>I didn&#8217;t know what it was.<\/p>\n<p>I do now.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peignot\">Peignot<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s used a fair bit now.  I see it on signs a lot.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/graphics\/example.png\" class=\"centered\" height=\"70\" width=\"215\" alt=\"Peignot example\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I especially like the way Peignot handles lower-case letters.  They have super high ascenders.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty years or more I&#8217;ve wanted to know what this typeface was.  I look at it, at words <i>formed<\/i> in it, and I get a sense of nostalgia.  It&#8217;s a nice feeling, that.<\/p>\n<p>Now I know.<\/p>\n<p>Peignot.<\/p>\n<p>Who knows?
