What was last year like for me?<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s run down the list.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><b>What did you do in 2004 that you&#8217;d never done before?<\/b><br \/>Visit Florida.  I&#8217;d always wanted to go, and this year the company&#8217;s annual managers&#8217; conference was held in Orlando.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Did you keep your new years&#8217; resolutions, and will you make more for next year?<\/b><br \/>As a child I never made New Year&#8217;s Resolutions.  I&#8217;m not planning on starting now.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Did anyone close to you give birth?<\/b><br \/>No.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Did anyone close to you die?<\/b><br \/>No.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What countries did you visit?<\/b><br \/>person, nowhere.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?<\/b><br \/>Friendship.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What date from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?<\/b><br \/>July 9th, because that was the first day of Shore Leave, and my first book-signing.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was your biggest achievement of the year?<\/b><br \/>The <i>World of WarCraft<\/i> midnight opening at work&#8211;I planned on twenty people showing up, and instead had several times that number.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was your biggest failure?<\/b>My inability to finish a novel outline&#8211;it grew, and it grew, and it grew some more, and it was depressing as hell.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Did you suffer illness or injury?<\/b><br \/>No, another healthy year.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was the best thing you bought?<\/b><br \/>My new car&#8211;a 2005 Volkswagen Beetle.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Whose behavior merited celebration?<\/b><br \/>Sometimes, my staff&#8217;s.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?<\/b><br \/>Sometimes, my staff&#8217;s.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Where did most of your money go?<\/b><br \/>My student loans.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What did you get really, really, really excited about?<\/b><br \/><i>Hellboy<\/i>, the movie.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What song will always remind you of 2004?<\/b><br \/>&#8220;Run,&#8221; by Snow Patrol.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Compared to this time last year, are you:<\/b><br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>i. happier or sadder?<\/b> About the same.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>ii. thinner or fatter?<\/b> Thinner.<br \/>\n&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<b>iii. richer or poorer?<\/b> Poorer.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What do you wish you&#8217;d done more of?<\/b><br \/>Actual writing, as opposed to research, plotting, and character building that my writing days usually turned into.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What do you wish you&#8217;d done less of?<\/b>Work.  I was notorious for not going home, spending fifty-plus hours at the store each week.  I&#8217;m not sure that it gained me anything.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>How will you be spending Christmas?<\/b><br \/>I spent Christmas with my parents, brother, and sisters.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Did you fall in love in 2004?<\/b><br \/>Tragically, yes.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>How many one-night stands?<\/b><br \/>None.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was your favorite TV program?<\/b><br \/>I watched very little television in 2004, probably less than I did in 2003.  I never missed <i>The Practice<\/i>, though, and I thought its final season was, in many ways, a return to the show&#8217;s glory years.  I really like the spin-off, <i>Boston Legal<\/i>, but it&#8217;s also just not the same.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Do you hate anyone now that you didn&#8217;t hate this time last year?<\/b><br \/>Other than the people running the country, no.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was the best book you read?<\/b><br \/><i>Jonathan Strange &#038; Mr Norrell<\/i>.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was your greatest musical (re)discovery?<\/b><br \/>Snow Patrol.  I wasn&#8217;t too hot on the two bands others thought I would like, Franz Ferdinand and Modest Mouse.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What did you want and get?<\/b><br \/>I don&#8217;t know that I wanted <i>anything<\/i> last year.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What did you want and not get?<\/b><br \/>I wanted <i>Van Helsing<\/i> to be a good, fun film, a real tribute to the Universal Monsters, and instead the loud, crass film disappointed and upset me at every turn.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What was your favorite film of this year?<\/b><br \/><i>King Arthur<\/i>.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?<\/b><br \/>I have no idea what I did on my birthday&#8211;I probably worked.  I turned thirty-one.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?<\/b><br \/>Friends.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?<\/b><br \/>Comfortable.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What kept you sane?<\/b><br \/><i>Someone<\/i> had to stay sane.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Which celebrity\/public figure did you fancy the most?<\/b><br \/>Keira Knightley.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>What political issue stirred you the most?<\/b><br \/>The Presidential election.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Who did you miss?<\/b><br \/>I would have loved to talk about the election with some of my friends from college.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Who was the best new person you met?<\/b><br \/>The staff I hired between June and December.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004:<\/b><br \/>Push the envelope.\n<\/li>\n<li><b>Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:<\/b><br \/>&#8220;Here comes your nineteenth nervous breakdown.&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;Nineteenth Nervous Breakdown,&#8221; The Rolling Stones\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I saw this on David Henderson&#8216;s LiveJournal, questions aimed at summarizing 2004.
