{"id":30439,"date":"2015-09-21T13:22:51","date_gmt":"2015-09-21T18:22:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=30439"},"modified":"2016-09-21T12:30:09","modified_gmt":"2016-09-21T17:30:09","slug":"the-religious-bigotry-of-ben-carson-candidate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=30439","title":{"rendered":"The Religious Bigotry of Ben Carson, Candidate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Let me state upfront that Ben Carson has disqualified himself to be the next president of the United States with his statement about how <a href=\"http:\/\/talkingpointsmemo.com\/livewire\/ben-carson-defends-muslim-president\">a Muslim cannot be president<\/A>, a statement that prompted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/notes\/2015\/09\/ben-carson-bigot\/406390\/\">Ta-Nahesi Coates to label him a &#8220;bigot&#8221; in a piece<\/a> for <i>The Atlantic<\/i> this morning.<\/p>\n<p>But I want to dig down into something Carson said in his defense of why a Muslim cannot be president. Carson said: &#8220;Muslims feel that their religion is very much a part of your public life and what you do as a public official, and that\u2019s inconsistent with our principles and our Constitution.&#8221;  I think Carson misses the irony in what he said here, because it&#8217;s applicable to a number of public officials in the United States if you replace &#8220;Muslim&#8221; with another word.  Kim Davis, for instance, feels that religion is very much a part of her public life and what she does as a public official, but I don&#8217;t see Carson calling that out as being inconsistent with our Constitution.
