Inspired by the newspaper article <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=32779\" class=\"ek-link\">on William Gillette&#8217;s 1900 <em>Sherlock Holmes<\/em> tour<\/a>, I found theater posters from that tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/gillette-1900-brown-small.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32802\" data-link=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?attachment_id=32802\" class=\"wp-image-32802\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"600\" height=\"900\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/gillette-1900-cream.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"32805\" data-full-url=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/gillette-1900-cream.jpg\" data-link=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?attachment_id=32805\" class=\"wp-image-32805\"\/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I did some clean-up of the backgrounds, and I might print these out, put these in frames, and decorate my home or office with them.  These are really lovely pieces of art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The picture of Gillette&#8217;s Holmes with the well-dressed young man in torn clothes is interesting, as you can see where Frederic Dorr Steele got his look for Sherlock Holmes in the stories he illustrated from.  Compare the dressing gown Gillette&#8217;s Holmes is wearing in that piece of art <a href=\"https:\/\/artfulunicorn.com\/listing\/606535548\/colliers-the-adventure-of-the-golden\" class=\"ek-link\">to Steele&#8217;s cover for <em>Collier&#8217;s<\/em> in 1904<\/a> for &#8220;The Adventure of the Golden Pince-Nez.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The originals can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/item\/2014636692\/\" class=\"ek-link\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/pictures\/item\/2014636690\/\" class=\"ek-link\">here<\/a>.
