{"id":33838,"date":"2022-08-16T21:07:20","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T02:07:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=33838"},"modified":"2022-08-16T21:07:20","modified_gmt":"2022-08-17T02:07:20","slug":"quiet-quitting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=33838","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Quiet Quitting&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Recently, within the last two weeks, on a day I went into Diamond&#8217;s offices, I heard the morning deejay talking about &#8220;quiet quitting.&#8221;  I wasn&#8217;t familiar with the term, and when the deejay came back to it and explained it was &#8220;the new word trend,&#8221; what he described was people not quitting their jobs but rather people doing what their job description said and punching out after eight hours, not going above and beyond.<\/p>\n<p>Today, a friend shared this Twitter thread that explains it better:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/karenkho\/status\/1559610501960966144\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"825\" height=\"877\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/quiet-quitting.jpg\" alt=\"Transcription: 'Quiet Quitting' is due to how many industries (media, medicine, academia, teaching, food service, entertainment, music, childcare) expect workers to regularly exceed expectations for very little recognition or reward and how people recognize it's not sustainable or worth it. If someone destroying themselves to 'exceed expectations' is 'meeting expectations' than 'quiet quitting' is just making the manager or company aware of how much the organization is built on extracting labor that does not match pay, salary, or the initial job description. A person making themselves supposedly invaluable to a company by going above and beyond doesn't guarantee anything or shield them from a manager who would not hesitate to fire them in a second (after stock buybacks, private equity, acquisition, or expense-reduction measures).
