{"id":34347,"date":"2025-02-07T18:39:58","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T23:39:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=34347"},"modified":"2025-02-07T18:39:58","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T23:39:58","slug":"the-cheeses-of-craggy-isle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=34347","title":{"rendered":"The Cheeses of Craggy Isle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Church of England is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cz9e23jlwdko\">soliciting the public&#8217;s input for the next Archbishop of Canterbury<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There&#8217;s only one candidate, really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-fullwidth is-style-scotch-tape-right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/father-ted-crilly-1200x675.jpg\" alt=\"Dermot Morgan as Father Ted Crilly, from the sitcom Father Ted\" class=\"wp-image-34346\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Think fast, Father Ted!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, Father Ted Crilly is a <i>Roman Catholic<\/i> priest, but if called upon, I am sure he would embrace the Church of England faster than Father Jack can move when he sights an unattended bottle of whiskey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s unfortunate that Dermot Morgan died twenty-seven years ago, the day after filming on the last episode of <i>Father Ted<\/i>.  And it&#8217;s also unfortunate that <i>Father Ted<\/i> co-creator Graham Linehan is a transphobic shithead.  Because I can <i>see<\/i> how the episode would go.  Or at least <i>start<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ted, in the Parochial House, reading <i><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hadrian_the_Seventh\">Hadrian the Seventh<\/a><\/i>, by Frederick Rolfe, Baron Corvo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not really sure where it goes from there.  Ted, being Ted, gets in <i>way<\/i> over his head.  Does something hugely unpopular.  Causes an international incident.  Barely survives a near-death experience.  Is either forced out or resigns, then goes back to the Catholic Church and the Parochial House like nothing had ever happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The <i>William Shakespeare&#8217;s Star Wars<\/i> plays are coming back into print later this year.  (They&#8217;re in the forthcoming March issue of <b><i>PREVIEWS<\/i><\/b>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This got me to thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shakespeare&#8217;s history sequence of eight plays from <i>Richard II<\/i> to <i>Richard III<\/i> is sometimes called &#8220;the Henriad.&#8221;  (The intervening plays, for the record, are <i>Henry IV<\/i> 1 and 2, <i>Henry V<\/i>, and <i>Henry VI<\/i> 1, 2, and 3.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Would Shakespeare&#8217;s <i>Star Wars<\/i> sequence of nine plays, from <i>The Phantom of Menace<\/i> to <i>The Merry Rise of Skywalker<\/i>, be termed &#8220;the Vaderiad&#8221;?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And might another Jacobean playwright have written a play of his own inspired by the sequence?  Perhaps Thomas Middleton and <i>The First Roguers&#8217; Tragedie<\/i>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>An Aldi opened up the street from me, about a mile and a half, last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went this afternoon for the first time, after finishing today&#8217;s big project at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I bought about thirty dollars of random cheeses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ll have to return in a few weeks and see if they have the Irish whiskey and stout infused cheddars that they often carry around St. Patrick&#8217;s Day.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Church of England is soliciting the public&#8217;s input for the next Archbishop of Canterbury.
