Clarke&#8217;s 2001: A Space Odyssey was released.  What might the ending have been like had it followed the story of Clarke&#8217;s novel, which has its climax among the moons of Saturn, instead?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Warning.  This does contain generative AI.  If that&#8217;s a dealbreaker for you, you may want to pass.  I, personally, am amazed at the visuals of the Monolith on Iapetus and the Grand Central Station that Dave Bowman passed through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2001: The Alternative Trip\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zJqllbb6k80?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This brought to mind an older fan film, done with models, that I really enjoyed.  Ignoring Clarke&#8217;s novel sequels (<em>2010<\/em>, <em>2061<\/em>, <em>3001<\/em>), what happens to Frank Poole, adrift in space?  The <em>Epilogue<\/em> fanfilm explores that.  Poole would continue on essentially the same path as the <em>Discovery<\/em>&#8211;Newton&#8217;s laws of motion and all that&#8211;and perhaps enter a solar orbit in the vicinity of Jupiter, but it wouldn&#8217;t be a stable orbit and, eventually, the giant&#8217;s gravity would pull Poole&#8217;s corpse in&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"2001: A Space Odyssey: Epilogue with Frank Poole.   \ud83d\udc49 (Ignoring 2010 etc. Sorry,  Arthur C Clarke!)\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ok9VZYcKjBs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What amazing stuff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, a rather interesting fan film based on Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C.
