I&#8217;d been down to Lynchburg in May, I think the weekend before Mother&#8217;s Day, but my mom had been agitating me to come for a visit, and my sister was planning on coming up from Raleigh.  I didn&#8217;t commit to anything &#8212; the weather looked a bit dreadful, with rain, rain, and more rain &#8212; and I got off to a later start than I normally would have because of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The view from Afton Mountain on Saturday was lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-fullwidth\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"720\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250614_152503-1200x720.jpg\" alt=\"The view from Afton Mountain into Rockfish Gap. Several layers of clouds loom over the gap.\" class=\"wp-image-34501\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Roads go ever, ever on&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunday morning, a deer decided to inspect my Beetle. Maybe he liked the fine German engineering?<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/20250615_104910.jpg\" alt=\"A deer lurks at the edge of the woods, studying my Beetle\" class=\"wp-image-34502\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trip home Sunday afternoon was, as I feared, rain, rain, and more rain.
