Not something I often do, as I don&#8217;t like driving into downtown, though it&#8217;s become better in the last several years, ever since they repaved George Street.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to go to a used book store to look for some research material for a writing project I intend to embark upon.  I intended go to the York Emporium, but they closed up last year, so I went to the new used book store, which I believe bought the York Emporium&#8217;s stock, In Between Pages, on Duke Street.  And, as is my wont, I parked on the top deck of the parking garage. It was surrounded by fencing then, and all I could do was take pictures from the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yesterday I was able to take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"720\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20251011_125851949.jpg\" alt=\"Zion Lutheran, as seen from the northeast on Duke Street\" class=\"wp-image-34813\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Something I noticed right off, which I did not see &#8212; and may not have been there &#8212; in 2021 was the row of headstones leaned up against the side of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"720\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20251011_130137522.jpg\" alt=\"View of the old headstones leaned up against the side of the church\" class=\"wp-image-34816\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I photographed a few of them.  No idea where the bodies they belong to are.  They were mostly unreadable, though I was able to make out that some were in English and others were in German.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"720\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20251011_130203053.jpg\" alt=\"Close up of three of the headstones against the wall. The one on the left is for Maria Magdalen Haller (1752-1823), and her stone is in English.  The two to its right &#8212; a name I cannot make out (center, death 1812) and Ana Catharina (right, death 1817) &#8212; are in German.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/?p=32963\">five years ago<\/a> that &#8220;there\u2019s a little cemetery on the belltower side,&#8221; and I was able to get a look at it.  It was a fenced off and packed rather tight.  I couldn&#8217;t read anything from a distance.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20251011_130024687.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of the cemetery plot at the church. There's an obelisk at the far end.\" class=\"wp-image-34814\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There was a sign on the side of the church explaining the cemetery plot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20251011_130045989.jpg\" alt=\"Sign placed by the York County Industrial Development Authority explaining how in 2018 work on the Yorktowne Hotel necessitated moving and reinterring the graves located here.\" class=\"wp-image-34815\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My conclusion, based on this, is that the graves now here were originally located on the north side of the church, where there are now the rows of stones leaned up against the building, to facilitate the work done on the hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ydr.com\/story\/news\/local\/2025\/04\/17\/zion-lutheran-church-in-downtown-york-to-be-redeveloped\/83100186007\/\">the current plan<\/a> is to redevelop the building into a community event space.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1500\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/IMG_20251011_130332475.jpg\" alt=\"Zion Lutheran Church, seen from the front across Duke Street\" class=\"wp-image-34818\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I wish I had the money.  I&#8217;d buy it myself.  I don&#8217;t know what I&#8217;d <em>do<\/em> with it.  A building that gorgeous shouldn&#8217;t go to waste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the used book store, I found nothing that I was looking for.  It didn&#8217;t even have a section where what I was looking for would <em>go<\/em>.  They were heavy on sci-fi, with smatterings of other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I <em>did<\/em> find an autographed book from an author in the gaggle that attends Shore Leave every year. someone I&#8217;ve been on panels with.  I found a few things I wanted, but nothing I <em>needed<\/em>, and so I refrained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that came to my attention this morning.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"232\" height=\"300\" src=\"http:\/\/www.allyngibson.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Screenshot_20251012_113946-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34846\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Really, Jim Jordan? &#8220;The Lord&#8217;s work&#8221;?  <em>Really?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may have been a while since I read the Bible, but I don&#8217;t remember reading about Jesus and the disciples going around Jerusalem wearing masks, hiding their identities, breaking into people&#8217;s homes, assaulting the elderly, breaking bones, zip tie-ing children, and disappearing Samaritans into black sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s some Nazi-ass shit, Jim.
