Donald Trump’s triumphal arch, which would make Albert Speer blush for both its size and its ostenatiousness, has a new announced purpose today.<\/p>\n

It will, like his fuhrerbunker ballroom, serve as a sniper nest and drone launch site.<\/p>\n

I won’t say how abjectly silly this is. One should be able to look at a national monument as see an inspiring symbol, not see it as a killing field. But that is how the president reframed his arch this morning.<\/p>\n

The reason is simple. The groundbreaking is being challenged in court, as it should be, and Trump and his lackeys intend to play the “national security” card. The president’s life itself is at stake, and the *only* way to ensure his safety is with the monumental Arch du Sniper Nest on an island on the Potomac outside Arlington.<\/p>\n

Do I need to tell you that this is stupid as hell? Snipers across the Potomac, effectively on the Virginia shore, “protecting” the president from a sniper nest atop a monument?<\/p>\n

It’s arrant bullshit that doesn’t pass the smell test, but Trump will say it, his base will believe it, and he hopes a judge will buy it — an ediface to his greed and vanity, sold on the cynical and nonsensical premise of national security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
