On a Doctor Who Blurb

Or rather… the Doctor Who blurb.

The BBC posted information on the season finale of Doctor Who recently, and fandom’s holding its collective breath.

I read the blurb. My first thought, “Wow. That sounds cool!” My second thought? “Wait a second. That sounds like…”

Let’s go behind a spoiler/speculation cut.

Here’s the text of the blurb:

Earth has been conquered and the Master rules supreme, with the Doctor a helpless prisoner, in the final episode of Russell T Davies’s Doctor Who.The entire human race has been reduced to slavery, as the mighty warships of a new Time Lord Empire rise from the ashes. Only Martha Jones can save the world…

David Tennant plays the Doctor and Freema Agyeman plays his companion, Martha Jones. John Barrowman and John Simm guest star.

Hmm.

Earth conquered. Master reigns supreme. Time Lord empire. Humanity reduced to slavery.

I got a Faction Paradox vibe off this. A massive vibe.

In The Book of the War the Master becomes Gallifrey’s War King as the War looms. In Dead Romance the Time Lords invade Earth and enslave the planet, reducing much of it to rubble, to use it as a base and/or bolt hole.

Yeah, I’m definitely getting a Faction Paradox vibe off that blurb.

Now, it’s just a blurb. Forty minutes of television, reduced to something like sixty words. It could be extremely misleading. The way blurbs work, it could be massively misleading.

Still, I’m excited. Despite my ambivalent feelings toward the three previous Whovian finales. (I’m counting Torchwood‘s “End of Days” in that number.)

Two weeks, right?

  1. Hi Allyn-

I do not know if you got my off-line IM but I said that on the 6th, Sci Fi Channel is aring only a few of season 28/2 of Doctor Who and the Sarah Jane Smith one is NOT one of the episodes that they are airing, bummer, but they are airing the last two epsiodes which is good as I missed it the first time around. I know that I am jumping ahead from reading this blurb, but curriosity killed the cat when I read the words “The Master”. I thought that he was long gone after the 1996 movie. (I might be remembering the wrong year here.) Without going into spoilers, if at all possible, can you clue me in? I knew that when BBC Wales was bringing the Doctor back that the Daleks and Cybermen were givens with returning enemies, (I think that Sci Fi will be repeating the Cyberman one too I missed it the first time around because I was helping out with my church’s Pilgrim Players’s children’s theater program’s production of The Wizard of Oz). Sorry for rambling here, but I am glad that the Doctor is making a comeback and by September, I will be able to watch all three seasons at the same time, so to speak. Season 27/1 on PBS, Season 28/2 on BBCAmerica and Season 29/3 on Sci Fi. Keep me posted, please. I want to consider you as a friend who is also a Whovian. It is so hard to find Whovians these days. Judy
