On Mispronunciations

True story.

When I read the first Harry Potter book, back in the dark days of the autumn of 1999, I had no idea how to pronounce Hermione’s name. What I came up with was…

Hermey Own.

Like Hermey, the elf who wanted to be a dentist in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Plus Own.

Hermey Own.

You know, I actually prefer my pronunciation to the way it’s said in the films. Because my pronunciation is silly, and the real pronunciation sounds like cats have everyones’ tongues. 🙂

Hermey Own.

  1. That’s how I pronounced it, too. It wasn’t until Book IV, where Hermione corrects Viktor Krum’s pronunciation of her name, that I finally figured it out. Which is probably why that scene was in there.
