On The Writer’s Almanac

The Writer’s Almanac.

It’s a public radio program distributed by American Public Media that appears on some NPR stations. Garrison Keillor spends about five minutes reading poetry, talking about interesting facts about the day in history, talking about writers who were born and died on the day in question.

I like the program. But I normally listen to WUNC, the public radio station out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, through their ‘net stream, and they don’t carry The Writer’s Almanac. If I catch WYPR, Baltimore’s NPR station, at just the right time, I’ll hear The Writer’s Almanac.

Usually, I forget.

Then, earlier this week, I wondered if, perchance, The Writer’s Almanac was available as a podcast. And as it happens, it is! ๐Ÿ™‚

Today’s episode mentions an interesting historical fact about today — on August 20, 1977 NASA launched Voyager 2 on its mission to Jupiter and beyond. To hear Garrison Keillor, with that distinctive voice of his, talking about Voyager 2 is just too awesome for words.

Also of note today — H.P. Lovecraft was born on August 20, 1890. I’ve read some Lovecraft, and I’ve said at times that if I were to ever write Harry Potter fanfic, I would write a story in which Hermione discovered a copy of the Necronomicon in the Hogwarts library, which would lead to all sorts of depraved and disturbed consequences. ๐Ÿ˜†

There you have it. I can now listen to The Writer’s Almanac whenever I want.
