On Things That Annoy Me, Number 42

People who don’t “get” references to Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy annoy me.

I realize that not everyone in the world is going to recognize a reference to H2G2, especially the really obscure ones, but still. There should be some minimum cultural knowledge here! 😆

  1. I can sort of understand if the person in question isn’t “one of us,” but there’s no excuse for a sci-fi fan over the age of 30 not to know 42, Pangalactic Gargleblaster, Babel fish, the importance of mice, etc.

As the parent of a nine-year old daughter, I am finding that kids aren’t reading nearly as much as we did when we were young. Not to sound all “grumpy old man,” but with the preponderance of video on demand and information anytime you want it, I often wonder if we read because it was something else to do other than watch non-demand TV or find trouble outside.

  2. Y’know, I think I first read Hitchhiker’s when I was nine. :vogon:

It was a reference to towels, of all things. As in, “Don’t forget your…”

The response, “Why would I want a towel?”

Look at where I work. It’s a geekdom dream. And a reference to towels just goes shoosh.

Times like this, I worry for the future. *shrug*
