The BBC has made some announcements about this year’s Doctor Who Christmas Special, starring Matt Smith. Filming began last week.
The story will be set during World War II and its guest cast includes Claire Skinner, Bill Bailey, Alexander Armstrong, and Arabella Weir.
Weir, by the way, played the Doctor in Big Finish’s audio play Exile. Which interestingly co-starred David Tennant, before he was cast as the Doctor.
The story for the Christmas special will apparently riff on C.S. Lewis’ The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.
This is not the first time Doctor Who has played with Narnian ideas; Doctor Who Magazine did something similar last year in a comic strip called “The Professor, the Queen, and the Bookshop” by Touched by an Angel novelist Jonathan Morris.
Of course, we have to get through two more episodes of Doctor Who first — “Closing Time” this week (which had best have the Semisonic song playing somewhere in the background), and the season finale “The Wedding of River Song” the week following.
But then! It’s roll on December and a new Christmas special.
Awesome. 🙂
