The kittens haven’t told me their names yet. If they don’t hurry up and tell me, I think I may go with names out of the Volsung Saga.

Meet the Cats
I’ve written a fair bit about my cats. Let’s meet them, shall we? The cat on the left is Woody. The one on the right is Leo, the one that disappeared not too long ago. I like the dishes they’re using. I bought them at World Market a few years ago as a peace offeringContinue reading “Meet the Cats”
On Kittens
I arrived home for work tonight and saw something running across the car port reflected in the headlights. I stopped the car, left the keys in the ignition, and investigated behind the metal shelving and the trash dumpster on the car port. Kittens. Three of them. The neighbors’ two cats had kittens recently, about aContinue reading “On Kittens”
On Kittens
My neighbors have two cats–Cat and Cheddar. Cat had kittens about six weeks ago. Chedder had kittens Saturday morning. Cat and her kittens are currently living in the storage shed behind my house. Cat is a blue-grey. Two of her kittens are the same. The other three are a lighter, tiger-striped grey. My sister cameContinue reading “On Kittens”
More Thoughts on the Cats
Woody and Tails have been fighting in the house. Tails doesn’t like people. Tails doesn’t like other cats. She never has. Tails sleeps during the day, all day long, and avoids people like the plague. But when the sun goes down, when the world goes still, in the dark she will wander the house andContinue reading “More Thoughts on the Cats”
Still more on the Cats
I’ve put Woody to bed for the night. He and Leo have a bedroom downstairs, the house’s guest bedroom. There’s a bed, a desk, some shelves, a collection of framed photos on the wall, and a private bathroom. In the bathroom there’s a litter box and a food dish for the boys, and at nightContinue reading “Still more on the Cats”
More on the Cats
Leo’s not come home yet. As best I can tell Woody did no lasting damage yesterday, though the Venetian blinds in my office needed some massaging back into shape. He’s a fairly smart cat–he knows how to get a window open if the latch is thrown. I think that’s what he was trying yesterday. Woody’sContinue reading “More on the Cats”
On the Cats
I own three cats. There’s Tails, of whom I’ve written before. And there’s the Boys — Woodrow and Leo, two brothers I took in nearly two years ago. Leo hasn’t been seen since Sunday. Woody and Leo have been inseparable. When one’s not around the other gets fidgety, though more on Woodrow’s part than Leo’s.Continue reading “On the Cats”
Three Unconnected Happenings
The cat–Woodrow–bled in my office chair while I was at work yesterday. The blood is dry, but it soaked into the nylon webbing, and I’m not sure at all how to clean it. Thank you, Woody. I keep a notebook on my dresser, in case I have a brainwave in the middle of the nightContinue reading “Three Unconnected Happenings”
On Polydactyl Cats
Polydactylism in cats is a genetic mutation, and a dominant gene. The mutation appears to have originated in Kent in the 1600s, and polydactyl cats were brought to North America by the Puritans in the 1630s. They were thought to be a sign of good luck to ship captains. Polydactylism is a defining characteristic ofContinue reading “On Polydactyl Cats”
