On Comics Musings

I’ve never had any real interest in writing comics.

Except for Hawkman.

I don’t know what it is about Hawkman, but I just love Hawkman. In particular, I love what Tim Truman, John Ostrander, and Graham Nolan did on Hawkworld in the early 1990s, even though that’s the point where DC Comics took Hawkman continuity out back and put a couple of bullets in it. But taken on its own, Katar Hol as a disgraced drug addict redeeming himself as a hero on a world that hated him &mash; that was really compelling stuff.

Everything since then, especially when the whole Hawk-god mythos was overlaid on top of Hawkman, and the various incarnations were merged into one gestalt being, doesn’t really connect with me.

That said, I have no real idea what I would do with Hawkman. But if Dan Didio called me up tomorrow and said, “Allyn, you’re the guy I want writing Hawkman,” I’d give him something kick-ass for Hawkman.

Then, this morning on the train, a new idea struck me.

Azrael.

DC has done nothing with the former Batman, mostly because the former Batman is dead. And the Order of St. Dumas destroyed.

But…

What if there’s a new heir to the mantle of Azrael?

Ideas were suddenly clicking in my head. A new Azrael.

I mean, why not?

I’ll have to write them down. Maybe they’ll come in handy. So that one day, when Dan Didio calls me up and says, “Allyn, how would you launch a brand-new Azrael series?” I’ll have something brilliant to say. 🙂
