The Madness of King Donald

America has no king.
America needs no king.

Screenshot of a tweet on the official White House account that reads: 'CONGESTION PRICING IS DEAD. Manhattan, and all of New York, is SAVED. LONG LIVE THE KING!--President Donald Trump. Beneath is a mocked up Time-esque cover with an image of Donald Trump, wearing a crown, and the caption, 'Long live the king.'

Seen on the official White House Twitter feed. Donald Trump, calling himself a king.

A king.

Donald Trump increasingly reminds me of Denethor. As he threatens our nearest neighbors, as he covets lands governed by our allies, as he spurns decades-long alliances and parcels up territory not his with foes, I think of Gandalf’s indictment of the Steward of Gondor.

I think George III gets a bad rap from Americans — he was a fairly decent king, and the colonists’ issues were with Parliament specifically — but we threw off kings almost two hundred and fifty years ago.

And today, Donald Trump calls himself a king.

I will never call him a king.
