The Drives of Theseus

I have arrived in the world. I have “installed” a hard drive in my tower with a ziptie. 🙂

Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 is coming out in the near future — the latest Mint blog post said the beta would be out this month, and it was approved for release yesterday — and I had decided to do a clean install LMDE7. My LMDE6 install is two years old, it’s a little crusty with things I don’t use, and I wanted to put it on the NVMe.

To do that, I was going to move some stuff around. Windows 11, which was on the NVMe, would move to an SSD. I’d shove a clone of the EndeavourOS install on my backup machine onto another SSD, And I’d get a cheap HDD to serve as a storage drive for mp3s.

I was acquiring parts over the last two months or so, and when I ordered a cheap, used HDD for the music drive…

Well, I didn’t read the eBay listing, now did it? I did a search for 2.5 laptop drives, because that’s the size drive bays I have in my tower, saw one that was cheap, and ordered it.

When it arrived, it was in a large box, it was heavy, and it was 3.5 inches.

But, I am nothing in not industrious! There is a grill half an inch or so above the power supply. I got some zipties over the weekend, and today I put everything together.

I cloned the Windows 11 install to an SSD. I cloned the EndeavourOS on the other machine.

I took the panels off the tower and started swapping out components. The Windows 11 NVMe is safely stored away in case I need it in the future and was replaced with a new, 2 terabyte NVMe onto which I will install LMDE7 in the next two or three weeks. (I could install the beta, but I can also be patient.) For the moment, I haven’t even created a partition table.

Windows 11 was grumpy the first time I booted it up on its new home, but it’s fine now.

The cloned EndeavourOS install needed GRUB reinstalled, and that’s fine now, too.

Music files are copying over to the new storage drive.

Why did I need a new storage drive? I had music folders in three different places, so I’m consolidating them, and the files are copying over as I type.

Theseus rebuilt his ship. I am rebuilding my computer storage. The drives of Theseus!
