Doomscrolling the War

In the early hours of Saturday morning, the air forces of the United States and Israel commenced a joint aerial assault on Iran in an attempted decapitation strike. Iran then responded by launching missiles at Israel, United States military bases and assets in the Persian Gulf, and host nations (Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirites) of those bases.

In brief, this is patently stupid on the United States’ part. There was no causus belli. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has wanted to attack the Iranian boogeyman for years and years, and he finally found a United States president, egged on by the Gulf kingdoms he thinks are his friends, dumb enough to back him up.

The former Twitter is, in a way, a rough draft of history, so here are some screenshots of commentary on the war that I’ve seen in my “For You” feed over the past day that give some flavor of how this clusterfuck is unfolding. (IE., not good.) Presented without commentary…

Let’s quote The Hunt for Red October here (which came out on this day in 1990): “This business will get out of control. It will get out of control, and we’ll be lucky to live through it.”

Truer words were never spoken, Admiral.
