Stupid Eye Tricks

I saw this on Twitter a few days ago and meant to write about it then. But it’s neither urgent nor important, so it fell by the wayside.

This post features an image full of the digit 3… and somewhere in that field is a 5!

As described, a screenshot of a Twitter post, with a giant field of white 3s on a black background, and somewhere there's a 5. It feels a little weird to look at, because the 3s are so close together the brain has trouble processing them.

Apparently, it is “absolutely impossible” to find the 5 within 20 seconds.

I found it in less than 3.

The trick is to defocus your eyes, and then you should see it right away. The 3s stop playing weird tricks in the brain, and the 5 stands out clear.

In the annals of the absolutely impossible, this was utterly probable.
