On a PlayStation 3 Delay

Sony’s new video game console, the PlayStation 3, may see its release in the United States delayed until early 2007, according to various reports.

The eye-opening new data on the PlayStation 3 is that Sony will likely spend $900 per console in manufacturing costs. Consoles have historically been sold at a loss, with the the companies turning their profit on software sales, but how much of a loss is Sony willing to take on selling the PS3 at the widely-rumored price point of $500?

This could prove interesting, to see when Sony decides to launch and at how much. Will their gamble pay off? Stay tuned.

  1. Huh. Revolution may not be quite as screwed as I was expecting. 😆

As for consoles being sold at a loss—Xbox and PlayStations have been sold at a loss. But Nintendo has consistently not sold its consoles at a loss. And I expect that trend to continue, especially with the Revolution not using top-of-the-line components.
