On "Nobody Told Me"

I really, really like John Lennon’s “Nobody Told Me.”

Years ago, six now, I bought the Lennon Anthology boxed set. I think I may have listened to this set once. Yes, yes, I know.

Needing something to listen to while hammering away at an outline I decided to pull out the Lennon Anthology and give it a listen. Demos, unfinished songs, alternate takes. Some people eat this stuff up. I eat this stuff up, considering the lengths I went through to acquire the Lennon’s bootleg The Dakota Beatles Demos.

So, this alternate take of “Nobody Told Me.” The “finished” song, which wasn’t really finished, was released on the posthumous Milk and Honey album. It’s catchy. It’s bouncey. It has a cool, yet non-sensical, lyric. I just love it. I haven’t listened to Milk and Honey in a while to tell you how the alternate take is different. And it doesn’t really matter. It’s just a great song.

Nobody told me there’d be days like these.
No one told me there’d be days like.
Nobody told me there’d be days like these.
Strange days indeed.
Strange days indeed.
Most peculiar, momma.

How can someone not like a chorus like that, with its clanging piano line?

Maybe it’s one of those songs that you just have to be there for. And I just love it. 😉

  1. Hobbit dates. 🙂 My webpage is geeky, and rather than produce dates and days-of-week in the “normal” sense, it produces them according to the Hobbit calendar, detailed in Appendix D of The Return of the King.

As for where to find “Nobody Told Me,” look on Milk and Honey for the “original” version, or on the Lennon Anthology for a session version.
