On Harriet Miers and Connections

On August 6th, 2001 President Bush received a Presidential Daily Briefing entitled “Bin Laden Determined to Strike in U.S.” This was the PDB that current Secretary of State Condi Rice was grilled about by the 9-11 Commission.

Yesterday President Bush nominated Harriet Miers, his former staff secretary and current White House Counsel, to be the next Supreme Court justice.

We learn today that Ms. Miers was the person to deliver Bush the August 6th Presidential Daily Briefing. A photo of Bush and Miers together taken on August 6th, 2001, was released by the White House and distributed to newspapers through the Associated Press.

What does this mean?

It could mean absolutely nothing.

Or it could mean that Bush is rewarding Miers for her silence on the subject of what he knew about al-Queda and when he knew it. Miers can’t really be questioned about what she knows–she can claim attorney-client privilege or Bush could invoke executive privilege.

The conspiracy minded may see a cover-up. I don’t see one, but what I do see is something very murky.

Whatever one sees in as the reasons behind Harriet Miers’ nomination for the Supreme Court stands as a political rohrschach.
