Sometimes I just don’t get Microsoft Word. It decided, for some reason, that several paragraphs were misspelled. The entire paragraphs. Words like “the” were, at least according to Word, misspelled in those two paragraphs. Everything was underlined in red. I decided to run a spellcheck on the entire document. Perhaps, I thought, this would kickContinue reading “On Frustrations with Word”

On a New Pair of Shoes
I needed new shoes. About a year ago I bought a pair of leather oxfords for work. They were comfortable. They felt good. And I’d worn them out. I went out Saturday in search of a replacement pair. Perhaps I’d even be able to find an identical pair… And I did! They’re new. They’re stiff.Continue reading “On a New Pair of Shoes”
On the Cubs and Mark Prior
It’s been a rainy and miserable day in Baltimore, but the sun was shining down in Chicago, and I settled down to watch the Cubs take on the Pirates on WGN this afternoon. Maybe it’s my Cubs bias showing, but I really like the broadcast team of Len Kasper and Bob Brenly. They’re knowledgable. TheyContinue reading “On the Cubs and Mark Prior”
On Prince Caspian
It was pretty. That was the recurring thought I had yesterday after seeing Prince Caspian, the sequel to 2005’s The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, based on the second (or fifth, depending on which order you use) book in C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia series. As one of the four films I wasContinue reading “On Prince Caspian”
On Interleague Madness
Interleague play in Major League Baseball began this weekend for this season, with all but two teams — the Cubs and the Pirates — playing against teams in the other league. (The reason why the Cubs and Pirates are playing is that there are two more National League teams than American League teams.) Am IContinue reading “On Interleague Madness”
On Elbow and The Seldom Seen Kid
It must have been a review in either MOJO or Q. It must have been. Because, otherwise, how would I have ever heard of Elbow? Early 2004 I bought their second album, Cast of Thousands. And it was amazing. It was dark and moody Britpop, what Coldplay and Radiohead aspired to but could never quiteContinue reading “On Elbow and The Seldom Seen Kid”
On the President’s Abject Disconnect
Times of war are times of sacrifice. In my grandparent’s generation — World War II — resources were rationed for the war effort. People from all walks of life gave up necessities so that the Axis could be defeated. President Bush, in our own Iraqi quagmire, believes in sacrifice. He sacrificed his tee time. HeContinue reading “On the President’s Abject Disconnect”
On Musical Tastes
After watching “The Doctor’s Daughter,” I downloaded the latest episode of Radio Free Skaro, to see what Warren, Steven, and Chris thought of the episode. For anyone who’s not listened to an episode of Radio Free Skaro, they break down a bit like this: 0-10 minutes: They talk about the Doctor Who episode 10-35 minutes:Continue reading “On Musical Tastes”
On the Exciting Memories
Yesterday, like Sunday, was miserable and rainy. Raw, even. Cold. Very un-May-like. I wonder if there’s a real word for that — un-May-like. I digress. And yet, I was strangely thrilled by the un-May-like conditions. There was something enticing about waiting for a light rail train as a light rain fell from the darkened sky,Continue reading “On the Exciting Memories”
On “The Doctor’s Daughter”
Wow, was that meh. Stephen Greenhorn, the writer of the latest Doctor Who episode, “The Doctor’s Daughter,” said something to the effect that, in writing a Doctor Who story there’s one thing that never changes — the Doctor. So, Russell T. Davies gave Greenhorn the opportunity to write a story that, reputedly, would change theContinue reading “On “The Doctor’s Daughter””
