Since I’ve seen this on a number of friends’ webpages, I thought I too could list a number of interesting things that happened on my birthday, the 24th of June. 🙂 Courtesy of Wikipedia: Events 1314 – End of the Battle of Bannockburn. Scottish forces led by Robert the Bruce defeat Edward II of England.Continue reading “On Things That Happened on My Birthday”

On a Public Service
First, today is St. Patrick’s Day. Go forth, and drink responsibly. And maybe watch some Father Ted. 😀 Second, Doctor Who debuts tonight on the Sci-Fi Channel at 9, with its first episode, “Rose,” followed by the second episode, “The End of the World.” Go forth, and watch. If you think you know Doctor Who,Continue reading “On a Public Service”
On Being Behind the Curve
At times I feel out of place in Raleigh. Why, you might ask? Because I just don’t sodding care about college basketball, that’s why. There are three top-notch college basketball programs right here, within a twenty minute’s drive, if I cared, and yet, I don’t. College basketball does nothing for me, sorry. Indeed, I didn’tContinue reading “On Being Behind the Curve”
On a Bizarre Walking Behavior
News of the bizarre! Scientists have discovered a family in Turkey in which the five children walk on all fours because they’re unable to stand upright. They speculate that the children may have suffered a genetic disorder–their parents are noted as being closely related–and they’ve reverted to an instinctual form of human mobility. Rather thanContinue reading “On a Bizarre Walking Behavior”
On the Road
It occurs to me that I’ve written nothing here about my recent vacation. Every summer I attend Shore Leave, a science-fiction convention held a little north of Baltimore, in Hunt Valley, Maryland. There’s a sort-of-matching winter convention, held in the same location, called Farpoint, and though I’ve attended Shore Leave regularly the last few yearsContinue reading “On the Road”
On Leaving Farpoint
Today is the final day of the Farpoint Convention. I expect it’ll wrap up around six, and depending upon traffic, I may make it home by midnight. Maybe. Fortunately, I don’t go in to work until one tomorrow, so time isn’t critical. 🙂
On Vacation
I’m leaving, heading out of town. Vacation. I’ll be attending the Farpoint Convention, a science-fiction convention held outside Baltimore every February. But that’s not until Friday. Until then? Well, the open road stretches ahead. 🙂
On Giant Microbes
Damn, I wish I‘d thought of this. 🙂 A company, GIANTmicrobes, offers plush dolls of all your favorite viruses and bacteria, like the Black Death and influenza. They even offer venereal diseases, like syphillis. The cuteness appeals to my sense of the perverse. 😀
On Poor Sleep
I slept poorly last night. I went to bed at a decent time–decent for me, at any rate–not much past eleven, curled up with Edison’s Conquest of Mars, Garrett Serviss’ 1898 sequel to H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds. read maybe fifteen pages, and then nodded off to sleep. At three I awoke withContinue reading “On Poor Sleep”
On a Random Observation
If you take used coffee grounds, seal them (and the used filter) in shrinkwrap film, and zap it with a heat gun, then you get something incredibly gross.
