The Klingon Incursion of Stardate 3100.0

Captain Log, Stardate 3100.0. Urgent dispatch from Admiral Stephen Turner at Starfleet Command. Ten Klingon warships, under the command of Fleet Captain Kron have invaded Federation space, threatening the Core Worlds, even Earth itself. The Enterprise is breaking off from our survey mission in sector Deneb IV.

I did not have high hopes for this game of Super Star Trek. Ten Klingons? Seven Starbases? What challenge could this possibly pose? I could trip over my own two feet and find a Starbase. And ten Klingons, scattered through the 64 sectors? I’d spent more time hunting Klingons than dueling them for the fate of the galaxy.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 3103.5. Following quick battles with the Klingons in sector Sirius III and Deneb II, the Enterprise is forced to put in for repairs at the Starbase in sector Deneb I. Unfortunately, the Klingon commander at Deneb II knocked out our warp drive, and it was fortunate indeed that we were close enough to the Starbase to make it there on impulse drive. Chief Engineer Scott will, of course, supervise the Starbase’s repair crews. While I have no doubts of their professionalism and skill, Scotty takes a dimmer view of anyone who dares touch his “wee bairns.” The Starbase gives us a repair estimate of almost a day, and once those repairs are complete we will return to our mission.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 3105.4. Barely had we departed the Starbase in sector Antares IV when we chanced across two Klingon warships flying in formation. We dispatched one with a photon torpedo, then maneuvered to get a clean shot at the second. The shields took a few hits, but otherwise, Enterprise has emerged unscathed.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 3106.7. Ambushed by two more Klingon warships in the Procyon IV sector, more skilled work from Lieutenant Sulu at helm and Ensign Chekov at weapon controls dispatched the two warships without much additional damage from our encounter yesterday at Antares IV. Spock notes that the Klingons seem to have adopted what he calls a “wolf pack” strategy, two ships in each sector to, perhaps, catch a Starfleet commander with his guard down. Spock may be over-analyzing our limited data, and for my part, our guard will remain high until this crisis has passed.

I’ve circled where the seven Starbases are located on the galactic map above. Seven! That’s a lot of Starbases…

Eagle eyes will, of course, notice that one of the circled sectors hadn’t even been explored yet at the time I took this screenshot.

Captain’s Log, Stardate 3110.8. The Enterprise has been on high alert since our departure from the Starbase at Antares IV. We dropped out of warp in sector Canopus I and found two Klingon warships operating, perhaps as Spock theorized, in a “wolf pack” strategy. Were we better positioned I would have ordered a brace of torpedoes, but the position of a nearby star would mean we would have to navigate under enemy fire in order to achieve ideal positioning. Thus, I called for a phaser barrage, and Ensign Chekov’s expert skill vaporized both warships. Now a single Klingon warship remains… and we have many sectors yet to explore. Now we are, as Doctor McCoy would say, “hunting a needle in a haystack.”

Captain’s Log, Stardate 3113.3. We’ve found the last Klingon warship in sector Arcturus III!

Captain’s Log, Stardate 3113.5. After the battle at Canopus I, the Enterprise embarked on a fast survey to find the final Klingon, traveling by warp at high speed, jumping over several sectors, taking a quick long range scan, and moving on if no Klingons were detected. The discovery of the final Klingon invader, not to mention a Starbase, in Arcturus III took myself and the crew completely by surprise. I eyeballed a firing solution and fired torpedoes before the Klingon commander could react. The Federation has been saved. We will, of course, be putting in to the Starbase for much needed R&R. Commendations to my crew, especially Mr. Scott and his engineering team for holding the ship together through everything I put her through. Kirk out.

As I said, I didn’t expect a lot from this game — too few Klingons — yet I ended with a pretty impressive score — 560.1475. The combination of the clustering of Klingons around my starting position, plus several sectors with multiple Klingons, then being right near a Starbase the one time I had serious damage to my warp drive (because if the warp drive goes out, you can often kiss a victory good-bye), helped. As too did the sheer blind luck of warping into the sector with the last Klingon. I destroyed 10 Klingons in 13 days, and that’s a really good time, hence the impressive score for a game of this nature.

Until the next invasion…
