The Piano, Unwanted

Late last week, someone dumped a piano at the dumpsters in my apartment complex.

It’s not uncommon for people in the area to leave furniture, building materials, spare tires (today’s find!), and other bulky junk in my complex’s dumpster area. There are signs that there are cameras, but if so I have no idea where they are.

After some research, I found that the piano was a player piano and about a century old. I couldn’t rescue it; I haven’t the room, and it wouldn’t have even fit through the door.

I put a call out on social media. Maybe someone would want this. Alas.

We had torrential downpours on Monday.

On Wednesday, I saw that other furniture that had accumulated was gone. I didn’t see the piano. No, it was still there, shoved against the hillside, behind the dumpsters.

On Thursday, again, torrential rains.

The rains have done damage. The cabinet has warped, and the hammer mechanisms, which had looked to be intact and well-maintained, are now are caddywumpus.

This piano is a century-old. It was loved. It has seen history. And it ends, unwanted, left to the elements, behind a dumpster. 🙁
