Snow fell last night. About an inch, maybe an inch and a half. The world looks pretty. The yard has that flat, white look that it gets when everything’s under a layer of snow. The road’s already clear.

On Falling Snow
Today’s weather forecast called for light rain showers in the evening. I was looking forward to that–the car could use a bath, after the snow and salt of last week’s snowfall. When I left work the wind was blowing lightly from the north and west, and dark clouds hugged the horizon. I frowned–north and westContinue reading “On Falling Snow”
On the Morning Blahs
One of those mornings, when I can’t get out of bed. Blah. One of those mornings where I dreamt the alarm going off, where I dreamt hitting the snooze button five or six times. I hate those nested awakenings. Blah. We may see snow flurries today. Better than yesterday’s rainy, blustery day. Blah. My coffeeContinue reading “On the Morning Blahs”
On Hateful Weather
Today was a miserable, sloppy day. Rain, cold driving rain. Pretty much all day. I hate it. It wouldn’t have been so bad had I not gone on an impromptu road trip. But the company let me leave early today at noon, and I needed to get my Christmas shopping done, and that meant roadContinue reading “On Hateful Weather”
On Fog
I feel as though I live in an accursed moor. Fog lays across the land like a festering malignancy. Spectral hounds bay at the moon. Death stalks the night. I am tired of fog. Tired, tired, tired of fog. I get up in the morning, and it’s foggy. I drive to work, and it’s foggy.Continue reading “On Fog”
On Cold
Screw it, said I. While my grandmother took her nap I turned on the furnace. I'm tired of being fucking cold all the time. I swear, it's been warmer outside the house than inside. Just yesterday my grandmother complained about being cold. “We could turn on the heat,” said I. “No,” she said. “We neverContinue reading “On Cold”
On Rain
It rained today. Forecasts called for an inch, give or take. In Fells Point, it seemed that we got far more than that. Rain beat up against the windows of the building, a hard driving rain that made the world feel dismal. Forecasts are calling for rain the next few days. It seems as thoughContinue reading “On Rain”
On Laundry
Yes, my grandmother had conniptions because I did laundry today. I didn't care. It was breezy. It was warm. I love the smell of dress shirts when they come in off the line. And I'd forgotten how good a Guinness Extra Stout can be. I'd gotten so used to drinking the Guinness Draught that theContinue reading “On Laundry”
On Arguing with the Grandmother
Today was gorgeous here in Baltimore. The sun was out, it was bright, and it was warm, a far cry from the rainy, miserable, cold dreariness we've had the past few days. Naturally, this meant laundry. I'm a firm believer in the use of the clothesline. Dress shirts smell so much better air dried. TheyContinue reading “On Arguing with the Grandmother”
On Hard Rain
The remnants of Tropical somethingorother Amelia struck Raleigh today. It rained, hard, for hours. Between six and mid-afternoon nearly a foot of rain fell on Raleigh. Traffic snarled as roads closed. Businesses closed as their parking lots flooded. Roads were closed off as nearby creeks rose. The trip home from work this evening took farContinue reading “On Hard Rain”
