Yes, my grandmother had conniptions because I did laundry today. I didn't care. It was breezy. It was warm. I love the smell of dress shirts when they come in off the line. And I'd forgotten how good a Guinness Extra Stout can be. I'd gotten so used to drinking the Guinness Draught that theContinue reading “On Laundry”

On Arguing with the Grandmother
Today was gorgeous here in Baltimore. The sun was out, it was bright, and it was warm, a far cry from the rainy, miserable, cold dreariness we've had the past few days. Naturally, this meant laundry. I'm a firm believer in the use of the clothesline. Dress shirts smell so much better air dried. TheyContinue reading “On Arguing with the Grandmother”
On Hard Rain
The remnants of Tropical somethingorother Amelia struck Raleigh today. It rained, hard, for hours. Between six and mid-afternoon nearly a foot of rain fell on Raleigh. Traffic snarled as roads closed. Businesses closed as their parking lots flooded. Roads were closed off as nearby creeks rose. The trip home from work this evening took farContinue reading “On Hard Rain”
On Air Conditioning
The air conditioning at work went out on Saturday. With the holiday weekend and all a technician came out today. Oh, it’s been bloody hot at work. It’s just hot in general right now. I’d rather live in an alternate world where rogue glaciers are attacking Maine and Michigan than in the world where myContinue reading “On Air Conditioning”
On a Musical Disconnect
It’s mid-May. I’m listening to Christmas music. No particular reason. I remarked today at work on the disconnect between people being excited about hockey–the Carolina Hurricanes, the local team, are in the Eastern Conference NHL finals or something like that–and the sultry weather we’ve been having of late. So, it’s mid-May, and I’m already thinkingContinue reading “On a Musical Disconnect”
On Monsoons
The spring monsoon moved over Raleigh several days ago. I wish it would go away. The rains aren’t constant. But they’re heavy, they’re hard, and they’re fast. Then they clear off, until the next rains–heavy, hard, fast. If it rains any more, we’ll see rising waters on the River Ganges.
On December Dreariness
Today’s miserable. It’s raining. It’s cold. If the temperature drops much more, the roads could get nasty, icy. North Carolinians don’t handle wintry conditions very well. No, not well at all. They panic. They raid grocery stores. The abandon cars on the highway. The city takes on the cast of a Balkan warzone. Me? IContinue reading “On December Dreariness”
On Monsoon Season
It has rained in Raleigh for the past thirty-six hours. Thirty-six straight hours of gloomy muck. We need the rain, have no doubt of that. Raleigh has been under severe drought conditions for quite some time. The local reservoir is down nine feet. I could do without the gloom. I could do without the muck.Continue reading “On Monsoon Season”
On Monsoon Season
Why must it be monsoon season in North Carolina? Every day rain. Heavy rain. Thunder and lightning. And then, with the snap of fingers, it’s over. The sky clears off, takes on a lovely hue, and you’d never even know that we’d been dumped on for two or three inches of hard rain. I hateContinue reading “On Monsoon Season”
On Hurricanes
So, there’s a hurricane coming up the east coast through Florida. Excuse me, a tropical depression. But it’s coming up the coast. Passing through North Carolina, on its way up north, to Baltimore and points beyond. Tomorrow. But tomorrow, I’m driving from Raleigh to Baltimore, for the Shore Leave science-fiction convention. I’ll be driving throughContinue reading “On Hurricanes”
