The Animaniacs DVDs are coming, on July 25th. We’ve known for a while that the release would be in the summer. An exact date is just gravy. I know what I’m buying come July. Call me happy. 🙂

On Geekdom
Today, the LEGO catalog came in the mail. The front cover made me insanely giddy. Batman LEGOs. Batman. A Batmobile. A Batwing. A Joker-copter. The Bat-hoverboat. Batman minifigs. Joker minifigs. Two-Face minifigs. Killer Croc minifigs. Okay, that last one’s a little strange. Killer Croc, but no Robin. Batman LEGOs. I can hear the Denny ElfmanContinue reading “On Geekdom”
On a Book Close At Hand
Stolen from Keith: Grab the nearest book. Open it to page 161. Find the fifth sentence. Post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions. Nearest book? American Aurora, by Richard Rosenfeld. Page 161? A letter from Thomas Jefferson to James Madison, written on June 21st, 1798. The fifth sentence onContinue reading “On a Book Close At Hand”
On Doctor Doctor
A completely random search in iTunes made me realize how much I’d love to see Doctor Doctor, the Matt Frewer medical sitcom of the late 80s, released on DVD. I’ve not seen it in years. There’s probably nothing remarkable about the series at all. But for some reason I have fond memories of the showContinue reading “On Doctor Doctor”
On Writing More Letters
Today, another letter goes in the mail to the Raleigh News & Observer. Our topic today? Presidential signing statements and absolute monarchy.
On a Conversation About Ender's Game
One of my employees at work is reading Orson Scott Card’s novel Ender’s Game. “Who,” he asked me a few days ago, “do you think should play Ender in an Ender’s Game movie?” I thought about this a few moments, sighed, and said, “Of all the child actors I know, the only one I canContinue reading “On a Conversation About Ender's Game”
On Why Republicans Can't Criticize the President, Either
Jane Smiley, the novelist, wrote an article at The Huffington Post on the recent Republican criticism of and distancing from the President. Her thesis? Democratic opponents of President Bush and his policies have been arguing for years that the President’s policies are misguided and flawed all to no avail. But several Republican commentators and theoristsContinue reading “On Why Republicans Can't Criticize the President, Either”
On Life at Work
Today. Today was, in a word, hectic. Oblivion, the long-awaited role-playing game for the XBox 360 and computer, went on sale. People needed Oblivion like junkies need a fix. It was that bad. I knew it would be. The phone calls yesterday, from customers wanting the game right then, right there, ranged from sullen toContinue reading “On Life at Work”
On David Feintuch
David Feintuch, author of the Nick Seafort science-fiction novels, has passed away. He was sixty-one. Midshipman’s Hope, the first novel in the Seafort saga, came out when I was in college, and after a very favorable review in the Washington Post I picked up the book and was very taken with it. The book’s pullContinue reading “On David Feintuch”
