This afternoon at the store I was setting up a display of system boxes in the front window. The boxes should be stacked one atop the other, but I like artistic flourishes with pyramids and spirals, so as I worked on putting together a PlayStation display the front door opened and a guy walked in.Continue reading “On People I Don't Resemble”

On How My Day Went
I don’t fucking want to talk about it.
On More Books in the Mail
Two packages arrived in the mail yesterday. The first had Michael Moorcock’s Gloriana, a fantasy novel about Elizabeth I’s reign. I’d seen the book, recently issued in a new edition, in Barnes & Noble a time or three but hadn’t, for whatever reason, picked up a copy. So when the Science Fiction Book Club offeredContinue reading “On More Books in the Mail”
On the Deep End
It’s been an odd day. Today, this morning, I found out that my company has been sold to our major competitor. Other managers spent the morning calling, seeking my insight. I had no insight. Over the short term, I expect no significant changes. Over the next six months as our systems merge into theirs weContinue reading “On the Deep End”
On Life
I’ve had to fortify myself with Guinness. I’m on my third in the last forty minutes. It’s been one of those days. The thing is, today didn’t start out that way. I haven’t been sleeping recently. Mainly it’s the weather–I’ve not been able to get comfortable at night. Last night, though, I managed to sleepContinue reading “On Life”
On Interviews
In the past week two college students have e-mailed me and asked if I would be willing to answer e-mail interviews for their course work. Color me surprised and flattered. The first interview was on writing. The second interview was on my job. Interesting stuff. Hope the assignments went well, kids!
On an E-Mail Frustration
I sold some stock a few days ago. Today, my brokerage sent me an e-mail presumably confirming that the transaction went through. I say “presumably” because this is the message I received: This is a graphic email message. If you are reading this message then your email program does not support HTML format. We recommendContinue reading “On an E-Mail Frustration”
On an Easter Tradition
The family got together for Easter. I would have liked to sleep in, but breakfast was scheduled for 8:30 sharp. As it was my brother still had to awaken me. After breakfast–waffles and scrapple–I went back to bed. The family went off to church. The tradition the last few years has been to dress upContinue reading “On an Easter Tradition”
On the Things I Don't Understand
I don’t understand why the water pressure in my shower doubled in the last week. I don’t understand why the Muzak system at work insists on playing the Spice Girls. It’s not 1997 anymore. I don’t understand why Obi-Wan calls Anakin “the Chosen One” in the Revenge of the Sith trailer when we all knowContinue reading “On the Things I Don't Understand”
On a Silk Flower
I bought a flower today. It’s a fake flower, a silk flower. VW Beetles have a mini-flower vase built into the dashboard. After three months, I needed a flower for it. It looks really nice. 🙂
