On Needed LEGOs

I’ve noticed some interesting — and similar — search phrases in the logs recently. Phrases such as:

  • LEGO Sarah Jane
  • LEGO Doctor Who
  • LEGO Daleks
  • LEGO Doctor Who video game

Yes, there are people out there wanting information on LEGO Doctor Who products.

LEGO Doctor Who!

There are LEGO Star Wars sets. LEGO Batman sets. LEGO Harry Potter. In 2008 there will be LEGO Indiana Jones.

Why not LEGO Doctor Who?

The LEGO corporation is based in Europe. The BBC is based in Europe. LEGO doesn’t have to go as far to make a deal. 😉

But not just that. Doctor Who is easily the BBC’s most identifiable brand worldwide. Doctor Who is a children’s program. And it has a rabid fanbase with disposable income. LEGO could target the two markets most interested in their product — the kids and the fanboys. It’s the same market they’re targetting with their Star Wars products.

And to be honest, I’m not that taken with other LEGO’s licensed properties, but if they produced a LEGO Doctor Who line of sets, I’d be all over that. 🙂

LEGO Doctor Who. It needs to happen. I wonder who I need to write to…

  1. You’ve got my vote, that’s for sure 🙂 On a related note, where did you find the little image (just underneath your `About Me` section) of what looks like a Peanuts version of the Fourth Doctor in his TARDIS? That’s just…indescribably awesome…

  2. About a year and a half ago John S. Drew pointed me in the direction of a guy on LiveJournal who had done some Peanuts-styled versions of the Doctor.

I’ll have to do some digging. Maybe I can find a link. He didn’t have a link, and it took some doing to find them. He had the first three Doctors together, the second Doctor with Jamie, the fourth Doctor, and the fifth Doctor. I’ve got full-size images of all of these.

The full-size images don’t actually scale well. The thumbnail version is the thumbnail that Opera cached, and it’s better looking at that resolution than it would be if I’d taken the full-size and scaled it down to the same resolution.

Did I at least bookmark it?

I’ll be damned. I did bookmark it. 🙂

  3. Yes, yes, yes! LEGO really needs to wake up and smell the Doctor Who coffee. I wrote to them recently and got the following response within two hours:

“Thanks for getting in touch with us.

I think Dr Who LEGO would be a fantastic idea but I don’t know of any plans to make any. Our Design Team, based in Denmark, try to find products that will be popular all over the world, so they tend to use well known licensed characters such as Harry Potter, Star Wars and Batman.

I will pass your comments on to them.

    Regards,

So it looks like they don’t think Doctor Who Lego would be popular enough, certainly outside the UK, to be a commercial success. Nonsense!

I created a group on Facebook to campaign for Doctor Who Lego… we really have to change their minds! http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7622621011
