On Donations

Yesterday, I did something I’ve never done before.

I gave money to a political campaign.

Now, I have given money to foundations and such. But never a campaign. And I get fundraising letters. All the time. Letters from Hillary Clinton. Letters from Barack Obama. Letters from Howard Dean. Letters from Al Franken.

I gave money to the John Edwards campaign yesterday.

It was the last day of the quarter. They were making a final push for contributions for the reporting period.

So, I made a donation. I put my money where my mouth is.

See, I’ve said all along that Edwards is the choice the Democrats should rally behind. Because he represents a competely different ethos than anyone else in the race. When Edwards talks about the two Americas, the growing income inequalities, the need for health care coverage, and the like, I get the feeling that he means it, and he wants to do something to make a difference.

With Hillary Clinton, I feel like she’s in the race because she feels it’s her turn. With Barack Obama, I have no idea why he’s in the race. I don’t even know what his message is.

But John Edwards? I know his message. I like his message. It’s the right message.

I put my money where my mouth is. I donated twenty-five dollars to the John Edwards campaign.
