Today is Memorial Day, the day where we stop to remember the soldiers who gave their lives in the service of our nation.
The best way to remember their ultimate sacrifice is to keep others from being added to their number. On this Memorial Day, the fifth since we invaded Iraq, we should be asking ourselves, “How long until we’re out? How long until our soldiers are home?”
Polls show “63 percent supported a troop withdrawal timetable of sometime next year. Another earlier this month from USA Today and Gallup found 59 percent backing a withdrawal deadline that the U.S. should stick to no matter what is happening in Iraq.” Democrats were elected in November to majorities in both houses of Congress as a sign of the public’s disgust with the continued conflict in Iraq.
Bush has been a “War President” through six Memorial Days. Only Richard Nixon can claim an equal number, not exactly the most resounding of claims.
On this Memorial Day we need to think of how best to extricate ourselves from Iraq. We need to think about the troops coming home and soon, so Bush can’t claim a new record.
