Years ago I lived in Amish country, a little east of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. There were some Amish farms on my road, and there were kids in the neighborhood. As Halloween approached, I felt a bit giddy inside — there were kids in the neighborhood! Halloween! Amish kids! Halloween!
I’d never really lived anywhere that trick-or-treating was done. There were never any kids around.
Suffice it to say, this particular Halloween I was feeling downright giddy.
And so, I stocked up on candy. Lots of candy. These Amish kids, when they came door-to-door, they were going to be spoiled rotten. They were getting… candy!
Halloween night came, and I had my candy. And I filled a bucket with it. And I sat on my front porch, waiting for the kids to come.
The Amish kids never came.
And I ate a lot of candy.
I discovered that the Amish don’t do Halloween. This was most disappointing. I really wanted to give the Amish kids York Peppermint Patties and Smarties and the two or three other types of candy I’d stocked up on.
This year? They gave out Little Archie comics by the bundle for us to give out to kids at home if they come around. Little Archie. Looking forward to it. 🙂
I haven’t bought any candy, though. Maybe I’ll stop at the store on the way home from work. Or on my lunch break. Something something.
Ooh! I need popcorn. Or something. So I can watch cheesy horror movies. Like Billy the Kid vs. Dracula. Yeah. Cheesy horror movies. 🙂
Happy Halloween!
Unfortunately, I live out in the country now where the closest kid is 5 miles away. Contrast with last year before we moved, when I had to resort to giving out entire bags of beef jerky due to running out of candy, comic books, and even the granola bars normally reserved for lunch. I guess the next low would have been the canned goods in the pantry.
Tonight is a good night for KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park but it’s sadly out of print.
