On What Others Would Do

Ah, Mr. Stephen Fry. 🙂

He wrote, in his most recent column for The Guardian, “Some Christians have What Would Jesus Do? as a motto; I have What Would Douglas Think?” Douglas being, naturally, Douglas Adams.

What an amazing motto. “What Would Douglas Think?” Doubtless it would be something snappy, something witty, something that brings with it great erudition and great learning, with just that right touch of sardonicism.

I picked up a tee-shirt recently — WWBD, it read. “What Would Batman Do,” and beneath the letters, the broken bat symbol from The Dark Knight. Batman would probably let batarangs fly, destroy the Gotham City underworld, and flirt with the edge between the limits of the law and the edge of justice.

I’ve often wondered “What Would Kirk Do?” As in Captain Kirk. He’d probably let loose with a flying leg kick, phaser stuff out of existence, speak in a strangely staccato fashion, and snog alien babes from one side of the galaxy to the other.

“What Would Spider-Man Do?” Whine. Pout. Whine. Make a deal with the devil when his marriage became too burdensome so he could play the field again. Whine some more. Okay, maybe not a role-model anyone wants to emulate.

“What Would the Doctor Do?” Whatever the problem, he’d use the Sonic Screwdriver on it. It does have three settings, after all.

“What Would the Smurfs Do?” Oh, that’s easy. They would smurf, smurf, and then smurf for good measure.

You can play at home. What would a role model — or not so much a role model — do? 🙂

  1. Have you ever seen Avatar: The Last Airbender?

“What Would Iroh Do?” is an excellent maxim, not least because the answer is ususally either “have a cup of tea and chill” or “kick everyone’s arse in a 10-mile vicinity”.

  2. That is, indeed, an excellent maxim. Oh, I might substitute Guinness for tea, but that’s a substitution many people would gladly make. 😉
