On World Series Speculations

Weather in Philadelphia was miserable last night. Watching game five of the World Series, I can’t imagine why they even tried to play it.

I see now that game five, which was to resume tonight, has been put off until Wednesday.

As a consequence, if there is a game six, it will be played in Tampa Bay on Thursday.

I have a better idea.

Treat the suspended game as a suspended game. The teams will get back to it, if it’s necessary.

Instead, just go straight to game six on Thursday in Tampa.

If the Phillies take game six, they’ve won the World Series.

If Tampa takes game six, and then they take game seven, the series is knotted up at 3 games each.

Come back to Philadelphia on Sunday or Monday for the resumption of game five. Call it “game eight” if you like.

Tell me that wouldn’t be a damned exciting baseball game. 🙂

  1. I don’t disagree with Selig’s decision to suspend the game last night at all. Because it wouldn’t have been right or fair for the Phillies to win the World Series on a game prematurely called due to the weather.

At the same time, I don’t see a pressing need to finish game five at this juncture. The weather in Philly is going to be bad tonight, hence they’re pushing off the game until Wednesday. I think it makes more sense to just head to Tampa, play game six, and if the series needs to come back to Philly to complete game five it can.

But no, I’m not criticizing Selig’s decision making here at all. Except perhaps to wish that the game had been suspended earlier than it was.
