Overall, yesterday was dismal. Snow and sleet in the morning, changing over to rain by the afternoon. Precipitation fell all day. I wrote 2500 words yesterday, finishing up a story that had been in a stuck position for a few weeks. Surprisingly, the writing came easily, and after dinner I finished the writing. Then IContinue reading “On St. Patrick's Day”

On Regular Readers
It surprises me sometimes that anyone would want to spend their time reading my webpage. People do, and I’m grateful for that because I would rather not shout into the wind, yet it still comes as a surprise. It shouldn’t be surprising then that I have regular readers. Some I’ve learned to identify by IPContinue reading “On Regular Readers”
On Deja Vu
I call them “deja vu moments”–time seems to stop, and for the briefest of moments I know I’ve “seen” this before. Tonight, while straining macaroni I had a “deja vu moment.” Yesterday, scribbling some notes at work, I had one. A few days ago, while doing nothing of any import at work, I had another.Continue reading “On Deja Vu”
On Sherlock Holmes's Schooling
The first paragraph of the Sherlock Holmes’s essay: “[D]uring the whole of his recorded conversations with Watson, Holmes never mentioned his school-days. As Watson talked freely to Holmes of his own life at school…, the proper inference is that Holmes had no schooldays reciprocally to discuss, which I think is the truth of the matter.”Continue reading “On Sherlock Holmes's Schooling”
On Getting Away for the Weekend
Yesterday, I took my first weekend off since October and decided to drive up to Lynchburg and visit my brother and sister. Two pretty days for a drive. The weather was been fantastic, and the backcountry of North Carolina and Virginia were eye-opening. I saw mountains again, mountains. One bad thing, no cell phone signalContinue reading “On Getting Away for the Weekend”
On Sherlockian Ponderings
Yesterday going through e-mail I came across a call for submissions to a Sherlock Holmes collection of scholarly ponderings, satire, and pasticherie. I’m not much for satire, I’ve written a few pastiches in my time, and decided, on a lark, to e-mail back the editor with a slightly silly idea for a scholarly pondering, aContinue reading “On Sherlockian Ponderings”
Strange Crossover
Wouldn’t it be grand if Hermione Grainger found a copy of the Necronomicon in the Hogwarts library?
Sunday Morning
The forecasted winter storm came and brought nothing but rain. Good news for the grocery stores–even the rumor of snow clears out their stocks–but bad news for other sectors of the retail community. Last night, at eight-thirty, the mall down the street was a ghost town and I might have been one of a dozenContinue reading “Sunday Morning”
Motivation
Weigh matters carefully, and think hardest about those that matter most. Fools are lost by not thinking. They never conceive even the half of things, and because they do not perceive either their advantages or their harm they do not apply any diligence. Some ponder things backward, paying much attention to what matters little, andContinue reading “Motivation”
Three Unconnected Happenings
The cat–Woodrow–bled in my office chair while I was at work yesterday. The blood is dry, but it soaked into the nylon webbing, and I’m not sure at all how to clean it. Thank you, Woody. I keep a notebook on my dresser, in case I have a brainwave in the middle of the nightContinue reading “Three Unconnected Happenings”
